AFL CHAMPIONS Jonathan Brown and Matthew Richardson will captain Victoria and the All Stars respectively in the EJ Whitten Legends Game in September.

Brown, a triple-premiership Lion and proud Victorian, captained the Vics in the Hall of Fame tribute match in 2008 despite carrying a quad injury.

He spoke about what being named captain meant to him at Punt Road Oval on Friday.

"Very honoured to be captain of Victoria. I was very proud in 2008 … to follow in the footsteps of the great Teddy Whitten and captain my state," Brown said.

"We stuck it right up 'em that night, so hopefully we can get a repeat."

Tiger great Richardson, one of the most famous players to come out of Tasmania, lined up for the opposing Dream Team, which was made up of individuals from the remaining Australian states and territories.

The former Lions skipper booted three goals that night to lead his team to a 17-point win, while Richo slotted a goal after spending time on a wing.

"Raising awareness for men's health – that's what it's all about. I'm rapt to be involved," Richardson said.

The Tigers champion said he intended to keep his untarnished record as leader intact, with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

"I've got a perfect record as captain. I didn't captain Richmond, but I did in one game. It was at The Oval, in an exhibition game in London, and we flogged Essendon," he said.

"Took a little bag of five home myself."

The TradingPost.com EJ Whitten Legends Game will be at Etihad Stadium on Friday, September 2, in the week off before the AFL finals begin. It will be broadcast on Channel Seven, Foxtel and the AFL Live app.

It marks the first time the match has been staged since it was revealed late last year that only six per cent of donations went to prostate cancer research.

Ted Whitten died in 1995 after a long battle with the illness.
